WHC Omega-3 Test: determine your omega-3 index the easy way
Find out where your omega-3 levels really stand!

The WHC Omega-3 Test shows you how well your body is supplied with fatty acids. That includes the two most important omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. Both play a central role for your heart, brain and eyes.

A good omega-3 index is considered an important building block for your health and for healthy ageing. The catch: a deficiency is surprisingly common, and you often won’t feel a thing. That’s exactly why it pays to know your own value in black and white.

What is the omega-3 index?

The omega-3 index is the percentage of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in the membranes of your red blood cells. It reflects your long-term omega-3 supply and is a recognised marker for cardiovascular status. The recommended target value is at least 8%.

  • Measures EPA, DHA and 24 further fatty acids – 26 values in total
  • Simple finger-prick sample you take yourself at home
  • Analysed in a specialised reference laboratory (Omegametrix)
  • Personal results report on your omega-3 index
  • Gold standard: measured in the red blood cells, not in serum

This omega-3 test is right for you if …

  • you keep an eye on your heart and want to actively improve your values
  • a good supply for your brain and eyes matters to you
  • you eat little or no fish, or follow a vegan diet
  • you want an honest picture of your fatty acids instead of just guessing
  • you want to steer your nutrition by data, not by gut feeling

Using the omega-3 test: how does it work?

The test is simple and done at home: a small prick in your finger, 2-3 drops of blood, done. In the lab, 26 different fatty acids are determined from it: omega-3, -6, -7 and -9, plus saturated fats and trans fats. The key value for your heart is the omega-3 index, with a target of at least 8%.

In the end, you know exactly where you stand. And if needed, you can fine-tune your nutrition and improve your omega-3 index step by step.

How to prepare for the omega-3 test

  • Fasting sample: for at least 10 hours before the test, have nothing but water, so the result is standardised as well as possible. This also applies to supplements and medication of any kind.
  • Long-term intake of omega-3 products or fish: you don’t need to avoid them beforehand. The reason lies in the method: the test uses the gold standard of omega fatty acid measurement, taken not from serum but from the membranes of your red blood cells (erythrocytes). If it were measured in serum, recent meals and supplements could distort the result. In the cell membranes, they don’t.
  • Medication does not affect the result. Such substances aren’t built directly into the cell membranes, so they don’t influence the measurement. For standardisation, though, it’s best not to take them in the 10 hours before the test.
  • The result reflects your long-term omega-3 status. So you see your average supply over a longer period, not just a snapshot. That’s what makes the test so valuable, as only very few specialist labs offer this gold standard of fatty acid measurement.

How to use it

  • Just 2-3 drops of blood from your finger are enough for the omega-3 index test.
  • Simple, fast and easy to do yourself at home.
  • Note on the measurement: the omega-3 index is an important indicator of heart health, with a recommended value of at least 8%.

Omegametrix | WHC’s independent laboratory

Behind the test stands the Omegametrix laboratory, an internationally recognised reference lab led by Prof. Dr. Clemens von Schacky. It uses standardised, validated methods. You receive your result in an easy-to-understand report, grounded in recognised scientific studies.

A value of at least 8% is considered desirable. Lower values point to a reduced supply of EPA and DHA.
